When we think of “Mass Production” we typically think of two things - - the lack of uniqueness and the low prices it creates. As Henry Ford is credited with saying, “You can have any color you want as long as it is black.” While that may be all well and good for cars, it certainly isn’t for something as collectible as Oaxacan Alebrijes. And, that is why they are all the product of Hand Craftsmanship!
Hand Craftsmanship, in the realm of Alebrijes, takes two forms: Hand Carving and Hand Painting. In the case of the former, the Hand Craftsmanship begins with the choice of a piece of wood that will be used for the project.Typically taken from the female Copal tree, this piece of raw material is imagined by the Artisan to be in its final state - - an eagle or bull; a toucan or a rabbit; an owl or a fox.
Once the Artisan completes this portion of the Hand Craftsmanship they move on to what helps make Alebrijes so fantastic - - the wonderful and beautiful manner in which they are painted! Unusual colors accented by even more unusual markings make every Alebrije produced through Hand Craftsmanship a wonder to behold, and a joy to own. In fact, very often owning one is not enough and people find that once they have purchased one they develop the need to get more!
